Sport - a big priority in Bottrop

Tennis is an enormously popular sport in Bottrop, and by now there are more people who play tennis than football. Nearly six percent of the population of Bottrop play tennis, a figure that is extraordinarily high for the Ruhr area. If tennis is not to your liking, how about a round of golf on the 18-hole golf course, gliding at the Schwarze Heide airfield, archery, volleyball, badminton, billiards, rowing, or horse riding? Maybe you prefer one of the martial arts disciplines that are taught in various places throughout the city. Bottrop is also home to various martial arts regional training centres as well as regional and national centres of excellence.
While the sports boom in Bottrop was supported and welcomed, it was also so rapid that the city had difficulties in keeping up with the construction of sporting facilities. Nonetheless, the last 20 years have seen the construction of 10 gymnasia and indoor sports facilities, six outdoor fields, and an indoor swimming pool - a total investment of around EUR 35 million. Altogether there are now 26 outdoor and 26 indoor sports facilities, seven indoor swimming pools, and one outdoor pool.
The city of Bottrop together with its 127 sports clubs (29,000 members) also takes pride in having staged various great sports events throughout the years. The city's sports department and sports clubs have organized differend international championships such as european and world billiards championships, world volleyball and wheelchair volleyball championships, German unicycling championships and the World Games in 2005. The last major event in Ruhrarea - so also in Bottrop - was the fifa soccer world championship in Summer 2006.
