The Kirchheller Heath and other Attractions in the Vicinity

Open fields and woodlands

Kirchheller Heath
Kirchheller Heath

The wide and open heaths in the north of Bottrop attract a large number of visitors from the Ruhr Area, particularly in the summer. As part of the "Hohe Mark" nature reserve, the Kirchheller Heath is a great asset to Bottrop's attractiveness as a place to spend one's leisure time. This area provides a breathtaking landscape of open fields and extensive woodlands.

The Kirchheller Heath is particularly appealing as a place to relax and unwind, with around 100 kilometres (65 miles) of marked cycle paths and footpaths and its streams and lakes, such as the Heidesee and the Heidhofsee. Barbecues, shelters, a 35 metre high vintage point, playgrounds, and rest areas cater to a wide variety of interests. Whether you just want to have a picnic at the forest station, go to the "Heidhof" holiday centre or take long walks around one of the lakes - rest and relaxation are always guaranteed.

Schwarze Heide Airfield

Flying above the clouds may be a notch short of actually being as free as a bird, but a visit to the skies does unarguably have its appeal. An ideal starting point would be the Schwarze Heide Airfield, which borders the Bottrop area. The sightseeing flights that take off from here offer an extraordinary view of Bottrop and the surrounding areas. If you're a little less adventurous and would rather keep your feet on the ground, you will still enjoy the unique atmosphere of this small airport. You can watch the takeoffs and landings over a coffee and a slice of cake or pastries.

Schwarze Heide Airfield is also a hotspot known throughout the global gliding community, as this is where the aerobatics world champion has his hangars.
